You need:

Laptop cdrom drive with JAE connector (TEAC or NEC)
JAE > IDE adapter
IDE buffer (To get the best performance)
Kickstart 3.1 (Does 3.0 support ATAPI? KS 37.500 doesnt)

Stick it all in your A1200 and use IDEFIX97 to install.

No, I mean a standard buffer.

Having a HD and a CDROM on a single chain from the interal header is going to cause major slow downs when copying data from a cd to the hd for instance.

I would definitely recommend one.
