I once sent a Mcintosh power amp to Italy.  That sucker weighed like 70 lbs.  At the buyers request I sent it via the Post Office "surface freight".  In other words, by boat.  Delivery time ended up being about 5 weeks.  The upshot was that it only cost around $60.00, or ~35gbp.  

This was about 4 years ago, so prices may have changed dramatically by now.  But at the time I remember thinking it was very cheap.  Its an option you might want to consider for heavy international shipments, such as Amiga 3000Ts, etc.  .
