Games I can play with my friend over the internet?
« on: May 07, 2011, 04:37:41 PM »
Hi, I have a friend who lives a very long distance away and we'd like to simple games (that will run under Windows) to play with each other over the internet.  I mean games that we can play and will be finished within 5 minutes to an hour.  Something in the vein of Atari 2600 games or 80s arcade games would be good - especially two player competitive ones.  I've tried to see if any of the 1980s console emulators would support net play, but only one 2600 emulator does, and you need to have a shell account with your IP to set up the special Kaillera server it requires.  We're looking for something much more simple and direct (i.e. one of those games where if you provide each other with one's IP number you can connect).

We're essentially looking for something like the old null-modem or modem play games from the 1980s.

We are hoping to avoid:

- MMUDS or MORPHS or whaterver they are called (Call of Duty, Warcraft, First person shooters, etc.)
- games that require a paid subscription

We might consider signing up for games that use a central server if it's free.

We've already tried the various chess games, etc. but were looking for something a little different than board games (maybe a strategy military board game would be good).

He doesn't have any retro hardware so it must run under Windows.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I've heard great reviews about this game.

I must admit that although I am a regular user of WinUAE - I have no idea how to make it work with the PC's internet connection.  Is it easy to set up - (this fellow doesn't have much patience for emulators and such - he's not techy and I would have to set up a very minimal WinUAE setup by remote on his PC in order to get this running).

Interesting....we're not interested in fighting games, but the others might be good.

To be honest, games we absolutely love to play when together are Atari Combat, Intellivision Sea Battle, Activision Ice Hockey, M-Network Baseball for the Atari...

Simple two player games like that are great fun.

Gauntlet II on the Amiga was another we loved to play together.

Firepower on the Amiga is one that might be good.
