Tips on getting Lightwave to run under UAE
« on: November 18, 2009, 05:51:01 PM »
Hi, I've always wanted to understand how to use Lightwave on the Amiga (yes I know I can get it for the PC - that's not what I'm trying to do).

Nowadays I use UAE quite successfully for all sorts of graphics, sound, animation and music creation.

I installed an old version of Lightwave (5.1 I think, but I also have 3.5 and 4.0 installed) on my virtual Amiga.  I was able to get the Modeller to display well on an RTG screen, but the Layout tool does not display well.  It's either cut off beyond the border of the screen, or I can see the whole Layout screen but it is really small...and also I cannot use any other resolution other than the weird lo-res option which is somthing like 672x430 (or something like that).  The other resolutions either result in parts of the screen being cut off or lots of graphic errors (800x600 mode for instance).

I'm just interested in hearing from anyone who has had success getting LW to run under UAE.  What UAE settings you used, what were the virtual Amiga's settings and Lightwave settings, etc.

I'm running LW 4.0 through Amiga Forever 2006. It's extreamly fast. One of the only reasons I got AF was to run LW.
Windows XP screen setting is 1280x1024.
WinUAE host display is set at 800x600.
Amiga screen setting is 1152x864 32bit.
LW screen, 672x432 8 colors.
The LW interface takes the whole screen with about an inch and a half on the left edge of the interface that is the LW interface grey. The remaining LW screens do what you state. I'd like to get the LW screen into a bit higher resolution also. Will be dinking around with the display setting some more, as I said, LW through WinUAE/Amiga Forever is scary fast. I'm running an Athlon 64 x2 with a gig of ram and ATI integrated Radeon Xpress.

Awesome.  Thanks for your feedback and please let me know if you have any luck with different screen sizes.

Running UAE in 800x600 mode I am able to use the regular 672x432 8-colour mode in the layout tool and see the whole GUI,  but the screen only takes up about a quarter to two thirds of the 800x600 screen (it's not stretched to fill the whole screen).  It looks a little odd but it works I guess.

The Modeller loads up nicely in 800x600 and looks great.  I've heard though that with RTG screen one of the views doesn't work (the motion or animated view or something).

These are various old copies of Lightwave I've gotten on the hard-drives of old Amiga's I've bought/been given.  I've got pieces of the documentation and packaging, but nothing complete.  I'd love to buy a full copy (or even just the manual) of any version of the original Amiga Lightwave (PM me if anyone has one for sale).  I did buy the Quickstart tutorial video off Ebay and I'm waiting for that to arrive.

Apparently there was a version 5.5 for the Amiga release by NewTek (the very last version) that is entirely unlinked to the Toaster hardware and I think can even run on RTG screens.  But that version is rare as hen's teeth (I've never seen it - latest I've seen is 5.2).

Rednova:

I'm not too sure about the Dongle.  I doubt any Amiga dongle would work on the PC.  As far as I know, the actual Toaster hardware was the dongle in the Amiga.  However, there was a piece of software called "LightRave" that fooled Lightwave into running on an Amiga without Toaster hardware.

The versions of Lightwave I have salvaged from these old hard drives run without a Toaster card.  I think the Lightwave 3.5 directory I pulled off one old HD has LightRave installed on it, the 4.0 and 5.2 installations just run.  I'm really not sure how or why they work.  I've only been playing with it for a few days so perhaps I'll encounter problems in future.
