Configuring TCP stack to go online only when needed...
« on: December 22, 2005, 01:21:39 PM »
Hi. There's a tutorial on how to do this in MiamiDx but I'd like to use my W2k machine as the main machine. Is there a tutorial on how to do it in W2k?
BTW, this is to avoid using time in an ADSL package that's time limited rather than transfer limited...

Hi. Well, I'm not into newtworking at all, so give me a discount here. In this case it's a direct connection to the DSL modem. What I want is the connection to be shutdown when not needed, even if just 5 seconds idle. This would allow me to cut down costs. For example I might start FireFox, open 2 or 3 webpages and read them for a minute, then go on opening a few more links after that, and so on. During the time I'm reading them I'm not downloading anything and time is counting.

Arrgg, only 1 minute minimum!! Thanks Thomas, it's the same in W2K.

"I'd rather suggest to look for another provider with a volume rate. Your current one sounds quite expensive if every second offline time counts."

The trick is that with DSL it doesn't have any activation rate, so if I don't need to use programs that need a permanent connection it won't spend more if the connetion is shut down.

MiamiDx on the other hand allows that setting in seconds :-)
Maybe there's a way around this in Windows though I couldn't find any program/patch that does it.
