DENEB / A3K Woes
« on: November 20, 2014, 01:26:20 PM »
I have an A3K, 25MHz 68030 w/18MB RAM, 4GB HD, and a Deneb.  Connected to the DENED I have a 4 port hub and a NetGear FA101 USB Dongle.  Off of the hub I have a Samsung DVD-RW.

I bought the DENEB new from AmigaKit and at some point one of the ports went bad.  I had it repaired earlier this year by Michael Böhmer himself.

I don't have a lot of free time so this machine has sat off for at least 6 months.  It's in my house though so it's climate controlled.  I recently got the urge to fiddle again and booted it up a few days ago and it's been running idle until last night when I decided to get it on the network and dug out the FA101.  I then started noticing strange things...

It took me a while to get Miami to recognize the FA101 because I needed to load the pegasus.class since it wsn'tloading by default.  Then, I had to fiddle with IP settings and such.  Finally, it connected.

However, I then noticed the DVD would not always recognize the 3.5 disc I have in it and it appears that is because the  default for the massstorage.class was L:AmiCDFS and I only have L:CDFileSystem.  I don't think AmiCDFS is in the DENEB ROM is it?  The device itself was configured for L:CDFileSystem so a power cycle or eject/reinsert and it would then recognize.  What is weird is that I set the default for both the massstorage.class and the CD drive itself to  L:CDFileSystem, and even on a reboot (up until my most recent one), it was still looking for L:AmiCDFS.  Perhaps that's because it was a warm reboot?

In addition, if I click the "All Offline" in Trident, and then the "All Online", I get errors and the USB is dead until I reboot.

I 'm hoping that the L:AmiCDFS / L:CDFileSystem issue is now resolved but I'm definitely going to keep an eye on it.

If anyone has some advice about the DVD drive issue or the Offline/Online issue, I would appreciate the feedback.  Here is my log which includes a fresh boot and then an offline/online attempt.

Dang, after a COLD reboot, the L:AmiCDFS issue is back, and there is a device error.  Could it be timing?

Here's that log...

Hm... looks like I need to learn how to load the ROM since the main library and mass storage class are in the ROM.

I've tried Z3 mode before and my machine locks up.  I think it might be related to chip revisions but then again it could have been because a port was going flakey on it and it's since been fixed.  I'll try it again.

OK, so I've found Poseidon 4.4 and 4.5, but the poseidon.library is sill 4.2 in these - is this correct?

Thanks, I'll try that.

I opened up the case and changed the jumper back to SPARE so I'm not forcing it into Z2 mode now.  After this, 3 hardware devices show up under the boot menu now:

Board 1, Manufacturer 3643, Product 16
Board 1, Manufacturer 3643, Product 19
Board 2, Manufacturer 4626, Product 23

All are working; prior to the jumper change (I also reloaded the FlashROM so maybe that's why?) only the 3643 boards  were showing and they had different product ID's.  Weird...

I still am getting a system freeze either during WB load or shortly thereafter.... either it freezes hard and I need to reboot or it runs like a champ.

Frustrating... why am I addicted to this computer!

Ok, so I have not installed AmiCFDS yet but I think I finally got to the bottom of the issue.

I traced the lockup I have a boot (which happens 99% of the time) to the User-Startup entry of ENVARC:PsdStackloader.  After further research, I found a similar thread on EAB and it spoke of PsdStackloader being in the FlashROM as well.  When I flashed it last night, I actually forgot to add that back into it... yet the issue continued until I commented out the User-Startup line.  I actually commented out every non OS entry (other than Assign statements) in the Startup-Sequence and User-Startup and just got lucky that that was the first line second line I re-enabled for testing.

So I decided to leave it disabled but add it back into the FlashROM.  This time I tried the Quick Setup / Poseidon USB menu option of Luciferin and it added the PsdStackloader along with everything else that I was using in Proseidon so I suppose it reads the config file for this information.

Now when I launch Trident, the version of Poseidon is reflected as 4.5 also.  so I gues (maybe it's in the manual?) part of a Poseidon update should be to reflash the FlashROM.

So I supposed I'll end up Jinxing myself but I've warm booted and cold booted several times now without a lockup.  The DVD-ROM sometimes still doesn't show up but that's small potatoes compared to dealing with the lockup.  By redoing the FlashROM I got rid of the AmiCDFS errors.

Crossing fingers...

Is the massstorage.class in the FlashROM?

The lockups have not returned since I disabled the ENVARC:PsdStackloader entry in User-Startup and flashed it into the ROM.  The DVD-ROM shows up 9 out of 10 times now; I've rebooted countless times (both warm and cold) and no lockups yet.  My faith has been renewed for now!

You do make a good point that I don't really need the massstorage.class in the ROM... I believe it's only needed there if one wants to boot from the DVD-ROM or Flash Drive right?

Now I just have to solve the telser.device issue but that's in a different thread...
