Why would EEPROMs be needed for Kickstart 3.1 ROMs?

Erm, you do realise that the MX chips are..... EEPROMS.

(E)lectrically (E)rasable (P)rogrammable (R)ead (O)nly (M)emory.

If you are doubting the need for EEPROMS for kickstart 3.1 Roms, then why are the two you just sent to me (A1200) EEPROMS ?

Also, I'm suspicious that the metal shield may have been the reason for the problems I had, what exactly does it do? Can anyone give a brief explanation of why it's needed?

The metal shiels acts as 1) a total grounding and 2) RF shield.. stops any RF interferance.
