Don't worry about altivec support in future ppc cpus, IBM has stated that their cut-down Power4 version will include a vector unit compatible with AltiVec.
The situation will be similar to the programs that include two executables, one requires FPU and the other not... soon the same will happen, but one will require AltiVec and the other will work in 603/604/g3...
