Hi Dougal.
When i don't want to change my Wifi card on my A600 to transfer some files with CF pcmcia adapter, i usually mount a small arexx web server, it probably needs less memory than mount samba on your A1200, you can mount a ftp server also, that probably it will more usefull for your needs.
