Bother...

Hum,
i didn`t think of that....

Though, i know that M$ is going to make available the upgrade to pirated versions of XP ; (To cut down on the amount of spam and viruses spread by unprotected machines...)

And perhaps by downloading (and testing) this patch the world will just be that little bit safer.... ;)  (or not?)

[i`ll remove it if anyone wants me too]

Hum,
i`ve just had to remove that `update` completely....(and i almost didn`t manage....)

That (build 2096) looks ok on paper, but my machine just crawled along and won`t boot or close down properly.
And the display scramb;les up every so often (directX 9.0c ?)...
(i had to use the Force to reboot...)

media player 10 seems ok though, (hasn`t crashed , and has added a few extras), looks like that`ll stay.

My `Wreckamendations` are don`t bother with this SP2 build...

@ Waccoon
Hum, you could try disabling the restore feature (just switch on again when you need to make a checkpoint) and you may find that it shuts down just that bit quicker...
[i just switch it on when i install new software...]

And on topic...The Windows XP Service Pack 2 Build 2142  (xpsp.040528-0019) has been released (with update V5)
It will install on any copy as long as you dont got the most common pirated keys..
HOWEVER, when it restarts it checks against the online database if your key is actually valid (Meaning key gens wont work).
So much for M$ ,and Windows Update V5 , looks like they are shutting the door for most pirates...
This means if you just happen to have an invalid serial the windows activation window will pop in and force you to register without the ability to log in to windows.

(hum, no problem here ;) apart from the rubbish OS)

Download
( 270 Mb)

Hum,
is a windozes OS ever ready?

RC2 build number >2155 is supposed to be released in July, but the word on the street is that there may actually be a Release  Candidate 3 shortly after that (to fix the RC2 bugs?)

But this release (sry, open to beta testers only now) seems fairly stable (in a sort of win95 way)

Re: Solution for pirates
« Reply #8 on: July 02, 2004, 01:14:07 PM »
Hum,

So it looks like SP2 (and updateV5) is aimed at security and the prevention of illegal copies of xp...

The pirates are prevented  from obtaining patches from Windows Update...
And as mentioned before, this means that they will be left vulnerable and could contribute to virus/worm attacks which, in the end, will also affect the legitimate customers...

The solution at the moment seems to be  AutoPatcher XP 4.5 (April Update)...

Or perhaps it`s time for them to realise how stupid and rubbish the xp platform is and move onto linux...
(or dare i say A0s?)

[Disclaimer - i don`t know what i`m doing]

Hum,
The Installation package of the final version (2180) of Service Pack 2 has just been released to the beta testers on the Windows Beta Website and is available in for download now.
Er, but, unless you're a beta tester, you're gonna have to wait.
The file name is WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe, and the self extracting compressed file weighs at 266.01 MB.

The one thing that struck me was that apparently, pirated Keys appear to be working!

Update: Windows XP SP2 ships to manufacturing.

Hum,
 a few things i noticed ...
The number of connections is limited with the standard default settings!
(Only important if you’re using things like emule and need multiple connections)...

But a quick search of the registry solved the problem...
So here`s my first SP2 reg hack!

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
TcpNumConnections
Key: Tcpip\Parameters
Value Type: REG_DWORD - Number
Valid Range: 0 - 0xfffffe
Default: 0xfffffe

This figure limits the maximum number of connections that TCP can have open at the same time.

@Trinity
Have you tried ibrowse2.3 ?
