Hi stevezx7r,
Welcome to Amiga.org
Yes most of the Amiga line used batteries for the clock memory as well as on the A3000 it was used to "remeber" certian settings for bootup.
The Batteries were the old nicad ones and will leak and dammage the board around it and if not cleaned up will cause ireversible dammage to components on the board.
with the ecception of the A3000 the battery is not nessisary as the time has no barring on how the Amiga works.
Alot of us have replaced them with the coin style batteries but you must do it right as the Amiga tryes to charge it and this can cause it to heat up and burst causing even more dammage.
I myself bought a Lithium Ion rechargable coin battery and then its just a mater of soldering a proper holder to the spot where the old one was and works great without having to worry about replacing it again.
