Wait....if you don't tip your waiters, how much do they make an hour then??

Between £3.53 and £5.73 per hour depending on the age of the worker.

As it stands in the States, if you make tips, you get a whopping 2.13 an hour, so you're kinda dependent on tips.

That's about £1.40. That would be illegal in England.

And just so you know, coming from a former waiter and still a part-time bartender, 10% is rude....

IMO, *expecting* a tip is rude. Why should I tip somebody for doing their job, for which they are paid a salary?

I went to New York a couple of years ago, and went to a bar in Times Square. The barman there clocked us as we walked in, and watched us walk up to the bar. Despite this, he made absolutely no effort to approach us to take our order, preferring to stay at the other end of the bar so he could chat to his friend. Eventually I had to ask him if we could order some drinks. After we had ordered and I had paid, he stood there staring at me like he was expecting something. I asked him if I had got the money wrong, and he said "how about a tip?" I was naturally infuriated by him expecting a tip for such poor service, so I responded by saying "of course, a tip: look both ways before you cross the road".

Moral of the story: anybody who gives anything less than exceptional service is extremely unlikely to get a tip from me, especially if they ask for it.

So 2.13$ an hour is illegal, but for them to expect a tip, when the wage they make is criminal, that's rude?? Here in the states, most people know that people who work in bars or in the food service industry live off their tips.

If an employer is paying their staff an illegal wage, then that's an issue for the employee to take up with their employer. I certainly don't agree that customers should be *expected* to subsidise the staff's wages because the employer doesn't want to pay them a legal (or even 'reasonable') wage.
