Cloverfield

Saw this today. Bloody brilliant. The way it's shot from the perspective of a person holding a camcorder is at times frustrating, when the person holding it is swinging it around in blind panic, but actually that makes it all the more realistic. In that situation you wouldn't be able to take the time to focus on anything, and everything would be a blur. You really feel like you're there, and some parts are really frightening. Great stuff :-D

Heh, no I don't want to shoot you down Oli :-) All of your points are valid, and on the whole I agree with them. But if you take the film at face value and accept it for what it is, it's much more enjoyable. Yes the plot was thin on the ground. Yes the characters were a bit insipid. Yes there were some plot holes. But I just enjoyed it for the frantic scenes from the "first-person" perspective. The scene in the street when the monster first started destroying NY, when Brooklyn Bridge was destroyed, and in the subway tunnel were really heart-pounding moments, and in my opinion the camcorder idea really added to this. I have never seen a film like it, which probably contributed to my enjoyment.

I definitely agree with you on 28 Days Later though. That film remains one of my favourites!
