Applying for a patent

I've had an idea for an invention which I am not capable of developing myself. I don't even know if the technology exists yet. However I feel confident enough that it would be successful were it to be developed that I want to protect the idea. I think a patent is the way to go, but applying for a patent seems to be a minefield. If possible I want to make sure the product is protected worldwide. Has anyone ever done this? I would be grateful for some advice.

Thanks for the link. Will have a read through. I might give the patent office a call tomorrow to see if they can offer any advice.
