But yeah. FRIDAY. Off to try and find a buddy from uni with some other friends tomorrow. Nobody has seen him in about two years, not answering e-mail, phone, etc. Time to go scout out his hometown. Sunday I'm competing in a Munchkin tournament, which I'll utterly lose no doubt =).

I'm helping out at an activity day for autistic kids tomorrow. Should be fun

And? How was it?

It was awesome! I narrowly escaped being consigned to the messy play area (shaving foam and cornflower in water - I can't bear those textures!)

I spent most of the day helping a load of the kids build a tower of blocks bigger than a guy in a Bob the Builder costume. Construction activities with children normally frustrate me because they don't do it right, but these kids built their tower in a nice regular pattern with matched colours

Oh, and we had cake for lunch

Though messy play areas and autistic kids, does that work?

There always seem to be messy play areas available, but my experience so far has been that most autistic kids (and adults) don't like messy play due to sensory aversions. Those people who seek those particular sensations would no doubt enjoy it, but fortunately for me I haven't encountered any yet so I haven't had to join them :lol:

I never liked it because it was chaos.

You have to get used to chaos when you work with kids But ISTR disliking chaotic play when I was their age.

Hey, I identify with my 'tendencies' I have multiple sensory aversions (there are certain parts of my body I just cannot be touched [backs of hands for example, where it feels like my skin is being pulled off], lots of textures I can't touch [e.g. velvet and brushes], and I'm quite sensitive to certain frequencies of sound [e.g. engine noises, which feel like the are coming from inside me and make me panic]), and lots of things about social interaction which I understand in principle but really don't "get" and are quite disturbing or tiresome to me.

I think that's why I identify so strongly with the autistic/aspie kids I work with, though I don't claim to struggle to the same extent that they do on a daily basis.

So, is it just cornflower suspended in water that you can't bear or is it all Non-Newtonian fluids?

I think it's something to do with the gritty texture of the cornflour, and the mixed texture of the grit in the water.
