I think I want a Pegasos but I'm not sure why!
« on: August 16, 2006, 07:20:59 PM »
I love my A1200. I love just tinkering with the OS, playing older games and some newer ones too, and have also recently discovered demos for the first time. So I really enjoy the Classic Amiga experience.

However, I have recently been thinking about getting a Pegasos. I think I like the idea of getting a new "Amiga". I know the Pegasos is not really an Amiga, but the OS is Amiga-like and I have heard great things about it. However, I would obviously lose the ability to use my Classic software.

What I am thinking is that I could use the Pegasos as a fast Amiga-like system for surfing and general tinkering, and get UAE running on it for games. If I have a different UAE config for each game, I could have it automatically start the game when I double click the icon in MorphOS. That way it would be pretty transparent that UAE is being used, and it would be just like running a WHDLoad game.

Any input on the pros and cons of using a Pegasos as a Classic Amiga replacement would be appreciated!

The Pegasos board is much smaller than I had thought! It would be fun to build it in to a classic Amiga case (A4000 would be cool).

I would really appreciate any input from a Pegasos user on how fast UAE is. I don't care about using Workbench in Picasso screenmodes or anything like that, just running classic games.

@Wilse
Nice to see a fellow Reason lover on a.org :-) It runs great on my MacBook. Most of my computing (music making, graphics and surfing) on my MacBook. I use my Amiga for light surfing and classic games. I would like to use it for more, which is why I'm looking at the Peg.

I'm not looking to get rid of my A1200, though if I did get the Peg I would probably turn the A1200 back in to a desktop machine and use it as a portable WHDLoad box, and then use the Peg for surfing, email and classic games with UAE.

OK, I definitely want one but can't afford it just yet  :-(

Just so I can draw up a wishlist, what components are required? The Pegasos is just the mobo and the CPU module, right? So do I need a PCI/APG gfx card? And the RAM is DDR, right? Is that everything?

Cheers for all the info

Would a ATI Radeon 8500 All In Wonder work ok? Is that the best card to use with Morphos? It's a 128MB AGP card. I'm thinking of buying up all the smaller parts now and then getting the mobo when I can afford it.

Hmmm it was there about an hour and a half ago when I ordered it. It accepted my payment and I got a confirmation. Might give Matthew a call and double check he's got one.

Yeah I just ordered the motherboard. Got it for just over £350 including postage. I've emailed Matthew to ask him to confirm he definitely has one for me. Can't wait to try MOS. Just remembered I need to get a case for it!
