A couple of questions about openpci.library
« on: May 08, 2006, 08:48:52 AM »
I have an A1200 with a Mediator. I'm currently using a Voodoo 3000 and a Realtek ethernet card, both of which work well.

On the openpci.library home page, it says that USB support is cancelled, but further down the page it says that it supports USB. Can anyone confirm whether or not the openpci.library supports USB cards? If so, which chipsets can I use?

Also, does openpci.library live happily with Elbox's pci.library? IOW, will the system be able to distinguish between devices which use pci.library (Voodoo) and those which use openpci.library (network/USB).

Cheers

Thanks guys for answering both of my questions between you :-) Will download all the stuff tonight. Just need to know what chipsets I can use - I assume it's in the docs?

@Methuselas
I never got ShapeShifter to work (still hangs/reboots the miggy when I boot MacOS8.1). Interestingly I did manage to get Basilisk to boot with the 1MB ROM, but it did the same thing when I booted 8.1!  :-?

Haha, well we were here first, you lot buggered off and decided to live in your own time zone  :-P  Long live Her Majesty's Greenwich Mean Time!  :-D

If I could try MacOS 8.0 that would be cool, or maybe get a copy of 8.1 to you since you already know your Basilisk works with 8.0? That would confirm once and for all whether the problem is 8.1.

Can anyone who has used openpci.library with a USB card give any idea of performance/reliability? It seems to be much cheaper to go for the OpenPCI solution than the Spider USB card:

SPIDER USB: Card+P&P £49.36 + Poseidon £26.00 = £75.36
OPENPCI: Card £12.99 + Poseidon £26.00 + ArakAttack £13.69 = £52.68

If the OpenPCI solution is just as good as Spider then I'll go for that. I don't care about USB 2.0. 1.1 will be enough.

Well I'm gonna get a cheap PCI USB card from Maplin and try it out. If it doesn't work then I can just take it back. Don't really want to spend 75 quid on the Spider...

Well, it appears you were correct. I went to Maplin and bought a PCI card, and installed it in my Mediator. PCIInfo saw it correctly, so I installed openpci.library, Poseidon, and ArakAttack. I ran Trident, added five OpenUSB devices with units 0 to 4 (as advised by ArakAttack install document), pressed online, and just got this:

Quote
0-OpenUSB.device: OpenUSB.device 1.10 (3.5.2004) ©2004 by Guido Mersmann
10-OpenUSB.device: Unable to open 'openpci.library' V2.0!
 0-OpenUSB.device: OpenUSB.device 1.10 (3.5.2004) ©2004 by Guido Mersmann
10-OpenUSB.device: Unable to open 'openpci.library' V2.0!
20-poseidon.library: Opening DEVS:USBHardware/OpenUSB.device unit 0 failed device/unit failed to open (-1).

This was repeated for each device. :-(
