Upgrading Blizzard 1240@33 to 060@66
« on: December 03, 2005, 04:05:31 PM »
I've got a Blizzard 1240 @ 33MHz, and I'm thinking of doing something really scary and upgrading it to an 060. I want to go as high as I can, so I'm looking at a 66MHz chip. I'm after some advice on what I need and how to do it! I'm guessing I need these:

68060 66MHz CPU
66MHz Crystal Oscillator

Do they look ok? I don't know what voltage the board is at the moment. The 060 chip I linked above is 3.3v, but I don't know if this matches the board. Can I just replace the 040 with the 060?

I'd also like a CPU socket as I don't want to solder the 060 directly. Any thoughts?

Sounds extremely complicated  :-?

Are they pin compatible?

Cool! I'll take the card out tomorrow and have a look for the voltage jumper. I take it the two chips have the same pin configuration and number of pins?

Hi Brian, thanks for the info. So I should get this chip and this oscillator?

As for voltage, I need to check for the voltage selection jumper. Assuming I can change the voltage, am I right in thinking the new chip and oscillator will drop right in and work?

I've also found these sockets. Any idea if they will work with the 060?

Cheers

Thanks xaccrocheur, I'll have a look at that article. My card is not a PPC, I don't know if that makes a difference?

I've just had a look at the article xaccrocheur posted and it all looks far too difficult. I find electronic projects very difficult and the risk of destroying my 1240 is just too great. For that reason, I have decided to sell the 1240 and shell out for a 1260. I can't really afford the difference, but hey it's Christmas and I deserve a present  :-)
