I've seen similar things happen in other "vintage" markets, namely Tamiya Remote Control cars.
Around Christmas, lots of stuff gets listed and gets some amazingly high prices.
I think the people who are into vintage have the time and the inclination to spend on their vintage desires at this time of year. They are giving themselves a gift that is in line with Christmas but wouldn't be acceptable to them and their familes at another time of year. (ie they have an excuse in December
