More A1000 tinkering
« on: March 19, 2009, 08:23:01 PM »
Hello, all...

Last year, I started a project to upgrade an A1000 as far as I could without changing the motherboard. I put it on hold because of life but want to finish it before this year's CommVEx.

So far, I have...

Rejuvenator, which lets me have:
- ECS chipset & 1MB chip ram
- OS 3.1 ROM
- AGA2000 FlickerFixer
AdSpeed/IDE 14MHz 68010

On order, I have an IDE->CF adaptor and a cheap CF card. If all goes well, that will arrive next week. Then I can mount the CF "drive" inside the case and still keep the internal floppy. Will post some photos then (really, this time).

Currently, it boots up off a 300MB IDE drive and works flawlessly. :) SysInfo clocks it at near A1200 speed, not bad.

My next dilemma is RAM. There isn't any room for the CPU piggyback board I have, plus the AdSpeed/IDE might screw up compatibility anyway. I used to have a Dataflyer SCSI controller that had an 8MB RAM expansion, but both of those cards are toast.

Anyone have any 4-8MB side-slot RAM expansions sitting around? ;) Any other thoughts or suggestions for upgrades?

@actung:

I got the cable by pure dumb luck.

A couple years ago, someone was throwing away a storage unit full of vintage Macs, and I took as many as I could fit into my car - including several crates of cables. When I ran across that cable, I thought maybe I could use it on an ancient Epson I have or something, and tossed it back into the box.

When I got the AGA2000, I pulled it out and prayed it wasn't going to short circuit anything... I had no clue if the pinouts were right.

But it works. :)

Okay, photos, round 1. Click for bigger pics, though the resolution on my camera sucks, sorry.

Under the hood:

The AdSpeed/IDE fits very snugly under the floppy, but it does clear:

The Rejuvenator without the flickerfixer covering it:
