art back then was drawn in outline forst  then filled in with solid colors or graident when possible and renderd pixel by pixel. That was part of the craft of it all. Use 16 colos or less to get a gradient. Sachs was the best. But if you have a CD32 or Winuae get a copy of Leander. It has some of the best Pixel art ever. The artist that did that art has done many games for the Gameboy Advance where pixel art was used quite a bit.
