The up button of my cd32 controller stopped worting in this way. The ABS plastic frame that sits inbtweeen the buttons and membrane may have cracked. It's cheap ABS plastic. They only fix is to get another controller or GLUE the brown abs plastic and reinforce it somehow.
The competition Pro CD32 is much better build quality and shares the Sega Genesis look and feel.
