Mr Sheen Furniture Polish

Ah, Mr Sheen! Is it made by Johnson Wax or Simonize? Can't remember, but I know how it works!

The main component is of course water. This is combined with a wax using a substance known as an emulsifier, so the wax is actually dispersed in the water as very fine droplets.

There is also a water soluble anti-static agent to help dissipate electrostatic charges which can build up on polished surfaces. This is what attracts the dust and fluff. Most of the 'dust' is actually human skin flakes, but that's another story.

The emulsion is sprayed from the can using a propellant. This is a low boiling point liquid such as the various chlorofluorocarbons or even flammable stuff like butane or isobutane. The propellant is often emulsified within the can so every drop of Mr Sheen has its share of propellant. This prevents the power being lost before the can is empty.

Mr Sheen works by wetting the particles of dust and fluff thanks to the surfactant which reduces the surface tension of the water. The wetted bits are then bound into larger lumps by the action of the wax, which begins to coagulate as the water evaporates under the action of the duster.

I find Mr Sheen a real boon. It will tackle just about any household and personal cleansing task. Anybody who's into contemplation of the navel will know how quickly it gets clogged up with fluffy detritus and the ever-present skin debris.

Here again, it's Mr Sheen to the rescue. A quick spray and dab with a soft tissue and the navel will be as good as new and nobody will know your sectret. Try it!

Just got back from the supermarket and guess why I went. That's right! To get our weekly stocks of Mr Sheen, the polish in an aerosol can.

While I was loading the trolley, I happened to notice that it's made by Reckitt Benkiser. It's not by Johnson Wax after all! What a brilliant company Reckitt Benkiser is for inventing such a useful product.

Mr Sheen! The world (and computer keyboards for that matter) would be a duller place without it!

I'll try it out. I didn't realise Mr Sheen was available in a glass bottle too! How clever! Reckitt Benkiser really do think of everything!

Do you know if Mr Sheen has a website? I'd like to learn everything I can about it.

As to Mr Sheen's recipe, I doubt if Reckitt will answer your query.

I used to work as a research scientist in a company supplying Reckitt with raw materials (that's why I know so much about aerosal polish formulation - see my earlier post) and I'm pretty sure the Mr Sheen recipe (Reckitt code RB412-22345) isn't actually written down anywhere.

It's a bit like the formula for Coca Cola. Only a very few trusted and faithful employees are privy to the ingredients. No-one but the top man knows them all. To make a batch of Mr Sheen, they have to assemble each of the people with a knowledge of one or maybe two components.

Each is asked to enter his ingredient into Reckitt's computerised mixing system. When they've all entered their component, they leave the room, while the recipe is prepared and mixed.

And so it is that Mr Sheen remains the Number One cleanser/polisher for household and personal use. It is likely to remain so for some considreable time yet. The top man at Reckitt gave Mr Sheen a projected product lifespan of 75-110 years.
