Don't know if they're a hoax or not, it's just that they haven't shown us a single reason from which we could think that they are "for real"...

If they really manage to present a non-working prototype (hooray!) at BB4 (remember, they already failed last year), that would probably change their status from "hoax" to "extremely pathetic progress".
At Big Bash 5 in 2007 we'll then see Amy'05 booting half-way into Linux accompanied by a "progress" report before saying that they finally selected the "amazing" Sil0680 as their IDE controller chip.

Just be careful not to pre-order anything

Regardless of the whole anonymity (no names, no address) of Troika, I think there will be many (mainly on AW.net) who would even do that.
But... I would also hide my name if it's highly probable that what I do might turn out as either a hoax or failure.  ;-)

So far, Troika and their Amy 05 looks real

What makes them look "real"? Their "progress" reports? Their anonymity? Their website?
The website of this fine "corporation" must then look even less like a hoax?!  :-P

unless I can hold a motherboard in my hands I don't believe it exists.

But even if it "exists", would that really help us unless it boots into OS4 and Troika managed to get a license from Amiga Inc.?

@billchase

"Betatesting" of Amy'05 was already proclaimed in Autumn 2005 and they made a big fuss about it (as always).
Of course, they still haven't anything ready to send.
But "getting ready to send some" sounds as if they are arriving at a first milestone.
However, it's still a joke that large parts of the community (esp. at AW) still believe that the boards will be on sale in three months.
If everything works well (fixing existing hardware faults, porting, drivers, license), the Summer of 2007 sounds much more realistic to me.
I hope that some other project (ACK or some Italians) surfaces before. I wasn't to keen on buying anything from Troika from the start (partly had to do with their way of handling things and this whole anynomity-thing behind them).
It's also clear that a certain person involved in the project is a former dubious spammer from Moobunny who used the site for posting personal rants against bbrv.
It's a pity that a community member like Ian needs to deal with those kind of shady people.

Troika have let down the people coming to BB4 to see their prototype yet another time. They did not show anything, except for some print-outs.

Read here.

Does anybody remember their explanation from BB3? Some parts didn't arrive on time and the developer got ill?
I suppose for BB5 it will be something like "my dog ate the mainboard one our before I was planning to drive to BB5".

Nah, we have to admit, it's quite a progress compared to last year (BB3) where they didn't even have a booth.

Ian stedman being involved surely adds some credibility?

Does it? I am not too sure... Ian has done some smaller hardware projects and fixes, but it doesn't look like he has ever done a whole mainboard before.
Just look at those 90-degree routing of the electrical traces. How is that ever going to work?
