There's nothing to comment in this news item. Well, other than it lacks all vital information, but one has grown to expect that from these PR stunt announcements.

Lacks *all* vital information? Er, other than the latest os update is ready for the X1000 and that the systems are now shipping?!?! You're right, there's no information there at all, sigh...

The title of item is "AmigaOS 4.1 Update 5 CD for the AmigaONE X1000 "First Contact" system has gone GOLD"

The subject topic is the update 5 CD for X1000. Thus, one would at lest expect to hear what are the improvements in the update 5, if any.

Additionally one would at least expect to learn what HW will be supported by this update.

  • Does this update enable the 2nd CPU core to be used?
  • Does this update enable the use of more than 2GB of the system memory?
  • Does this update enable built-in audio?
  • Does this update enable built-in SATA?
  • Does this update enable built-in USB?
  • Is there 3D support for the graphics cards included?
  • Does this update enable/utilize the much praised XMOS chip?

AFAIK the 2nd CPU core isn't used from 4.1. As for the rest, given that beta-testers are, and have been using, the system for a while, you're better off asking them. My guess is beta-testing would have been ever so slightly hampered if the SATA, USB, didn't work, I lean towards assuming that they do work.

I for one would be quite interested to hear what exactly can be expected from the system while waiting for the mysterious 4.2 release.

So I assume, given your intense interest, that you're looking to buy one? I'm fairly sure that the 4.2 release isn't "mysterious".

Piru, I appreciate your coding skills, but please consider how you come across with these type of posts. Trevor has poured thousands of ponds into getting the X-1000 into existence and deserves nothing but credit. Most people left in the Amiga scene will have spent a fair amount of cash on their systems over the years, but I doubt if any have spent as much as Trevor. He's bought systems for OS4, MorphOS, Aros, etc.

If you're not going to buy one of these, then please respect the intentions of people that will. You know we do have minds of our own and can make our own decisions without the benefit of your immense X1000 and OS 4 knowledge. I promise that you'll be the first person I'll ask if I get stuck :-)

They cannot answer. They're under NDA.

Then we'll both have to wait

Most certainly I am not. I have better uses for 2.5 k€.

For something you have no interest in, it seems to be taking quite a lot of your attention.

The actual content of the 4.2 release remains a mystery, as well as the possible release schedule. It could be several years, and whether things like 2nd core or full 64-bit support will ever be achieved remain a mystery. All quite relevant questions considering the nature of the HW being sold. Running 32bit single core OS on such HW is much like (..reader beware: car analogy follows) buying a sportscar and disabling 3/4 of the engine.

Considering you have no idea of what 4.2 will contain or how far progressed the development of it is, your guesswork of how long it will take is basically as good as my guess i.e. worthless. I appreciate your analogy, however I don't see those restrictions being in place in the long term. My uneducated guess would be sandboxing of older apps and sacrificing backward compatibility for a new 64-bit API, multi-core, etc. Again this is just a guess. Having said that all the feedback that we have heard from people such as ClusterUK et al., as far as NDAs have allowed, is that even in your 1/4 engine state, it's still blazingly fast

I guess I've never cared about appearances, and I'm not starting now.

I'm sure your partner is delighted that you make such an effort! ;-)

Getting back on topic, I for one, will definitely try to get one in the next batch that they release. It's probably the first time since the mid 90s that I can see it being a machine I can use for my work and it's been a loooooong time since I could say that about my Amiga.
