I installed OS 3.9 with an emergency boot floppy disk directly to a new disk with no OS on it already. Do you really need to have 3.1 or 3.5 installed prior (or did my emergency floppy have some files on it to make this happen)?

Get 3.9 CD-ROM, make sure you have 3.1 install and away you go
