Congratulations on getting your hands on one. Too bad he only gave you an A500. It'll be slightly more troublesome than if he gave you an A3000 or A1200. The links on this site are very helpful.

For hardware info, go to http://amiga.resource.cx/

Main dealers are software Hut  http://www.softhut.com/cgi-bin/test/Web_store/web_store.cgi

and Amigakit http://www.amigakit.com/

To display on a TV required an A520 http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/a520

Otherwise you'll need a Commodore brand monitor. If you wish, Amigakit is selling the Indivision http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=indivision so that you can connect up to any regular PC monitor

Unless you can find a hard drive for it, running the workbench off floppies is not the most pleasant thing. It'll be fine for games though.
Amiga 3000D UP and running! Hear that clicking. 8)
Amiga 3000D & 4000D in storage sadly.
