Dying A3000D?
« on: May 03, 2009, 07:36:40 PM »
Hiya all.

I've developed a problem with the old A3k. Hope you can help me fix it.

Its developed a problem in the video signal after I got some Zip ram from Redrumola and installed them. The dreaded green boot screen, a workbench that looks as if you're having a bad acid trip, and bad flickering that prevents you from moving the pointer icon anywhere much. The FAQ I looked up said that Green indicates Chip Ram.

This morning, I switched the socketed DIP ram from my spare A3k and removed the new Zip chips (just in case they were the problem), but still looks horrible.

I don't know if its related, but, its not recognizing the external CD drive, even though I haven't changed anything.

Got any idea anyone?  :-?

Yes, as soon as I got the Zip chips in, I made sure that all other socketed chips were pushed down on just in case.  :-(

Hmm. Sounds exactly like his problem. Think I'll transfer the U202 & U203 chips from the spare A3000 and see.

Thanks Anthony. Forgot about your excellent tech website.

I changed both U202 & U203 from the spare A3k and there wasn't any change.  :-(

Wanting to see what would happen. I transfered all my Zip ram and the 3.1 Roms to the spare A3k and just moved the harddrive/floppy/PSU tray over. However, it won't boot. The power LED just keeps blinking.

Another idea, would a failing 3640 be the cause perhaps? I'm not certain, but I think one of the capacitors has blown. There's some crap on the pins of the chip next to it, but you can't really tell if the capacitor is bad. I think its one of the few that had the two that were placed on wrong. It looks different than the 3640 in my A4000.

Everythings been moved to the spare, but its refusing to boot. Only get the black screen, & 1 blink on the power led. Can't see that referenced anywhere.

I got the Zips from Redrumola, and he vouched for them. Yes, I put them in proper order, and I did take them out and the problem remained.

Now that I've put drive tray in the spare A3k, does anyone know why it the screen stays black with just a blink on the power led?

Sure?

I had 8 megs of Zip ram with 3.1 Roms before all this mess, and it was quite stable.

Yay!

I've been trying different combinations of jumper settings and I'm at least getting into WB (somewhat). I took out the 3640, and changed the jumper which was for 1x4 chip ram and moving it to the other jumper seems to help (I think). The cybergraphic program is crashing before WB loads up, and it can't see the CD drive, which I think might be dying too.
