God damn M@#$%@#$% Windows
« on: February 14, 2008, 10:08:44 PM »

Sorry for the swearing. I just need to rant a little.

There's an office Dell Dimension 4300 with WinME I'm trying to run defrag on and its giving me trouble. Can't even do simple maintenance on these god daym things without it giving you sh*t.

Makes me appreciate Amiga's more.

@Amiduffer

Sounds like something may actually be trying write something to the disk while the defrag is running, some sort of malware perhaps?

@A4000_Mad

Firstly, don't use anything Symantec/Norton. Besides which, I've done plenty of defrags with Symantec AV running no problems, must be something your doing thats upsetting it. BTW, all journaled file systems require a check of some kind if power is cut suddenly, it's all part of trying to protect your data. Ever shut an Amiga off during a disk write?

AMEN! No, I got rid of Symantec ensuring that it was totally cleaned out of the registry (you gotta do it by hand fer cryin out loud!), and it hasn't been hooked up to the internet in a long time, so I doubt malware is involved. Its giving me trouble even in safe mode!  :evil: If I run defrag in SM, it runs out of memory!

That's because defrag doesn't work on windows ME. It's a well known bug, and used t be well documented on the M$ knowledge base. It never got fix as ME was droped like a stone a year after release.

There is a reason why ME has such a bad reputation!

No kidding, thats the first I heard of it. The words knowledge and Microsoft seem to be mutually exclusive.  :evil: Thanks.

I found a defrag program called diskkeeper lite, and its defragmenting nicely as I speak.

How much did people have to pay for a Win ME "upgrade" when it first came out?
