While surfing the net on the Amiga is not a great experience, I must say that surfing some sites on my Amiga (which is rather updated) seems just fine. I'm limited to one or two sites simultainiously but you mustn't exaggerate how bad it is. Basic email, irc, sites like a.org and aminet work fine.

Just try it I'd say!

On my machine (see sig) surfing isn't that bad with IBrowse and AWeb. I guess those browsers are highly optimized because when I surf using ShapeShifter and IE or ICab that is really slow!

As for compatibility; IBrowse can even use my university webmail; I think that's great!
