Also, have you tried to use also opensimulator?.*It's a secondlife variant but in opensource, and you can have your own grid in your computer and have it connected with the rest using Hypergrid. I look at it and i'm setting up some grids for testing purposes.
Also, having your own sim saves you the hassle of having to buy or rent land in sl.

I don't understand your bashing. Second life and similar sims are interesting for people who like scripting and rendering of 3d models, and for people to likes new technologies. Of course, is also intended for average users that only want to chat or another things. I don't see the inconvenience in there.
