I had a Seagate Barracuda SCA via an adapter connected to the 50-pin head of an A2091. Worked, but it's bulky.
With OS3.1 I thought it's wise to stay under 2GB for the boot partition and under 4GB for the remaining partitions. Don't know for OS3.9. Lots of threads about this here. So easy to find.
