Infochannel and TCP/IP
« on: June 25, 2005, 08:17:45 AM »
I run Infochannel on two A1200's with a TV in our theater for presentation purposes. (One of them 7x24! No problems whatsoever). I use one machine to update the other with ScalaNet. I use a nullmodem-cable. Works most of the time OK.
The problem is to get files on the master A1200 from a PC. Up to now I use CrossDOS-floppies. That is not very handy. So I bought two PCMCIA-network cards and managed to get an A1200 running on my TCP/IP home-network. Before I try this in the theater and install all the cablework I wondered if someone has experience with Infochannel/ScalaNet and TCP/IP. Does it work? Does updating of one machine from the other work?

In my opinion Scala InfoChannel is one of the few (if not the only) remaining pieces of software in which the Amiga still outperforms any other platform, at an unsurpassable coast/quality mix.
So I am a little bit disappointed that there appears to be no member on this site (which I consider as the best Amiga-site at the moment, with the most active members), who can shed more light on using this software in a LAN.

Are there some alternative programs for infochannels?
What is ScalaNet?
I'm not sure what you are trying to do, but maybe smbfs might help you.

For the Amiga there are a lot of presentation programs like Scala. AmigaVision from Commodore for instance.
Scalanet is a set of plugins for InfoChannel to connect a master Amiga to one or more Amiga Player stations right from within the software. To communicate you can use a modem or nullmodem-cable, but also TCP/IP. I don't know how to get started as I don't have a manual.
SMBFS is OK for transferring files, but you have to know which one. ScalaNet makes this al easy for you. I know because I have it working with a nullmodem-cable right now. To transfer files from a PC to the master Amiga I want to connect the Amiga's to an existing LAN and use that connection also for updating the player station.

After a lot of experimenting: Got it to work.
You need to load the socket.library first.
Thanks.

Interesting, I had no idea that Scala had support for remote updating and control via TCP/IP on the Amiga.

/Patrik

I think InfoChannel has. Not Scala.

When I wrote this, I expected a flame war! But apparently, everybody agrees.

Maybe you should write a FAQ/Tutorial for Infochannel so we can be enlighted? :-)

It sounds very interesting that you can use TCP/IP to update your work.

If more members want that: I will.
But my point is: The classic Amiga cannot be used as a professional computer any more, except for presentations  on TV-screens, with programs like Scala of InfoChannel.
