You could sacrifice the tilde~ key or another under-used one, use the rubber key "feet" from an F Key etc.  What I used to do.  Its hard to tell, but these conductive rubber "feet" actually crack (split) sometimes resulting in a failed contact when you press 'em.

Humuhumunukunukuoapuaa okole hau malama pono :-D

Also C64 key feet work and are more durable, although they won't feel quite the same (Shorter key stroke)
