Couldn't give us a picture of the rear of the drive could you??

Most of the external units i've seen plug into mains power, but yours could use an AC or DC power pack, anything is possible.  A look at the back of the thing would help.

3.5" HDD need both 5V and 12V

2.5" HDD only needs 5V, if I remember correctly.
