Is the Linux install for you or your sister. There's lots of "live CD's" you can download and burn so you can see if your hardware is supported.
I've been using a distro called dynebolic

It will even let you "nest" you home directory on the C: section of your windows intall without having to partition your hard drive, so its like a no hassle Linux ditro on your Windows laptop.
