Super Buster and A3000: is it normal?
« on: May 06, 2007, 11:49:37 PM »
Hello!

Recently I've updated every chips inside my A3000.
Now I have also the Super Buster 11. I've noticed that, if I run the computer with a accelerator card (in my case a PowerChanger 040) everything works as it should but if I run the A3000 with its original CPU (68030/16), after setting all jumpers for this configuration, zorro cards are not recognized. It happens only with Super Buster 11. Using my old Super Buster 7 cards are 100% working.

Is it normal? Is Super Buster 11 compatible with the original A3000's 030/16? Otherwise, could my Super Buster 11 be defective or what could be the cause?

Thanks in advance!
Alex

It works when your PowerChanger 040 is installed because the Buster is then getting its clock signal from the accelerator card.  It probably supplies a 25 MHz signal.

I think it is the cause and that Super Buster 11 does not work properly with 16mhz. Newt week I'll get a Cyberstorm 060 and I'll test again with the new card and... I hope it will work  ;-)

Accidenti, sei sicuro? Vale sia per la 16 che la 25 mhz?

Questo potrebbe comportare qualche problema... la persona che mi spedirà la Cyberstorm mi diceva che l'unica modifica da effettuare sui jumper è proprio il settaggio da INT a EXT.

Sorry guys... Italian is faster, after I'll translate to English, too ;)

Well, while I was eating my pizza and playing a mandolino...        I have opened my A3000 to check the crystals:

- U111 = 28.37516 MHZ
- U104 = 32.000 MHZ

I'm so worried...  :-o  :-o  :-o
I can't believe that Super Buster 11 will not work with the Cyberstorm 060 and my A3000  :-(  :-(  :-(

Yes, I'll do.

Meantime I hope to get some hints by A3000 030/16's owners

Edit- dovrebbe essere questa la tua mobo

A3000 rev 6.1

con un quarzo da 32 Mhz. Giusto?

My mobo is different, it's a Rev 9/02 even if the CPU, the FPU and crystals are the same.

Super Buster rev 11 causes compatibility problems with a LOT of stuff in the A3000.

According to Amiga 3000's owners experiences, SB11 should work well in 3000s.
However, I've just found a very interesting text written by Dave Haynie about Super Buster chip revisions (it is different than the one reported by amiga-hardware).

Here is a little part:

There are only three released Buster chips: Rev F & G, used in the A3000,
and Rev I, used in the A4000.  The only functional difference between Revs
F and G are that F runs only at 25MHz, while G works at either 16MHz or
25MHz.  F and G are what we called "Level I"; they support basic Zorro III
functionality, but don't support Quick Interrupts, Multiple Transfer
Cycles, or Zorro III bus masters.  The part shipped with the A4000, Rev I,
is what we call a "Level II" part, which was designed to support the full
Zorro III specification.  However, it has a problem with Zorro III DMA
which wasn't detected until after the A4000 shipped.  So a replacement part
was built for use with the A4091 or other Zorro III bus masters.

Up to that moment (1993), the latest SB rev was 09 but the most interesting part is when he refers to rev "G" - such as Super Buster 07 - like the only Buster that can work both with 25mhz and 16mhz. Others work fine only on 25mhz machines.

Well... I hope that CV060 MkII will bypass all 16mhz limitations otherwise I will not allow to use the Cybervision 64 and that should be a shame  :pissed:  :pissed:  :pissed:
