Fresh installs of OS 3.1 and 3.9 on A1200

When I got my A1200, it was "preconfigured," and I really don't know what was installed beyond the obvious. Now that I got my subway card in there, giving me an easy way to transfer files, I was thinking of wiping the CF card and installing from scratch 2 partitions: one for 3.9, and one for 3.1. My question to you all is this: I don't know beyond the very basics what I should be installing to get the best use out of each OS. What additional software should I get, what patches, fixes, and whatnot. Some assistance to point me in the right direction would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Just for starters to get you thinking and going....
I remember many more threads started for new installs
for essential software but can't remember them all...  I searched
"essentials software". Hope ethese help...
