And I did :-)

Anyone here have some helpful advice now that I own an 18 year old black Mazda MX5?

-Edit- subject change to reflect the true nature of this thread :-)

Well, I've spent the last 2 days driving my MX5, managed to do 400Km :-D

I'm in love with the handling, it's nippy, responsive and turns on a dime... Once the top is down you feel brilliant, not too drafty at all. As it gets cold at night, I just turn the hot air bowers on and actually feel nice and toasty even powering down the motorway at 70mph in these cold English evenings.

Downsides: It's bumpy, bouncy and noisy... and I've bottomed out on far too many Speed bumps... I fear I'm doing some serious damage to the poor thing :-(

Everyone should have one of these :-)

Make sure the flexible plastic window in the top (if it's so equipped) always folds neatly when dropping the top, I let a friend borrow mine and he wasn't careful and ended up tearing the window due to it crumpling up in a way that put too much stress on the plastic.

Yeah, good advice! I've only had the car for under a month and already the little window at the back is developing a crease at the stress point :-(

I didn't say they weren't fun to drive. I know a few owners, mostly of Mark I models.

Mine is a Mark I, and it is a dream to drive :-)

You'll have fun replacing the clutch with a monotonous degree of regularity if their collective experience is anything to go by.

I'm not a woman driver*... :-D

*No offense to women drivers, but I've not met one who doesn't over-rev the engine when pulling away from a full stop... no wonder clutches wear out!

Having once owned a shiny new 1990 Miati, in blue, I thought I should chime in.  Add a good sound system, upgrade the speakers if they already haven't.  The stock is good but a CD player is mandatory!

Yup, the Stock speakers absolutely suck... no bass at all... the previous owner put in a very nice SONY CD/MP3/iPod player though :-)

Someone mentioned unzipping the back window before putting the top down.  Sorry, but this is the manufacturers recommendation.  I had some damage to my backwindow due to a problem when the alarm installer decided to put the top down for more room to work...

Some damage to the back window can be taken out by warming with a hair dryer on low.

Best advice, find a nice twisty road (having lived in England I know you have them handy) and go for it!

Yup... the MX5 was built for British country roads... I have never driven a car that handles as well as the MX5... It actually feels like the car is glued to the road, no matter how fast I go and how tight the twists and turns are... the thing never under or over steers... I'm in love ;-)
