One of the nice things about macs is the target boot option. With the mac off, hold down 'T' and turn the machine on ( keeping the t button down) This will allow you to emulate a firewire HD. Just use a firewire cable to connect it to another mac, and you can get your stuff off, or use carbon copy cloner to backup the entire drive to a usb drive.
Unfortunately WinXP doesn't recognise the powerbook as an HD in T mode... MacOSX x86 does though... hmmm, naughty Mr Jobs...
