My sister wants a laptop but as she does not know much about computers a friend at university is choosing it for her.

She plans on using it for internet including playing video clips and typing up essays.

She doesn't play games, has little interest in DVDs or graphics programmes, video editing and such like.

The laptop he has chosen is the Acer TravelMate 2702LCi

Do you think this would be suitable for her requirements?

If she's not into any particular software, doesn't mind if the CPU's a bit slow, but wants a laptop that looks good... don't forget the ibooks...

As a person who has a 3Ghz Laptop, I say this: it's not a mobile machine. It's a portable desktop...

It's big, it's hot, it's noisy, it's heavy and it thinks batteries grow on trees (you would be lucky to get 30mins on it).

If she wants a Windows machine then I can recommend the Centrino ones.

Codswallop.

I have an Athlon64 3200+ with huge 1400x1050 screen, and I get between 2 and 3.5 hours out of the battery.

Err Nick... I was talking about my 3Ghz Laptop... which is a Pentium 4, not an Athlon64 (which we both know is vastly superiour).

But for battery life alone, I would have to say the Pentium-M gives the best performance to battery life I've seen.

For the Desktop I have an Athlon64 :-)
