Aminet????
« on: October 08, 2005, 05:48:38 PM »
Silly question, what is Aminet exactly?  Free fully usable programs that originally appeared years ago on floppies or something else?

Thanks

Cool, so my next question would be, is it worth getting?  Also, is there any differences between ones sold here in the USA or the ones in the UK? I.E. - Pal or NTSC?  Thanks.

Judging by the question about PAL and NTSC, I think Epdon was actually asking whether an Amiga is worth getting, not Aminet. The question was a little ambiguous though :)

To answer your second question Epdom, yes the UK Amigas would be PAL and the US ones would be NTSC. You would need to make sure your screen was capable of displaying whichever video standard you choose.

Only you can answer the question of whether it's worth getting an Amiga. What do you intend to use it for?

No, I was specifically asking about Aminet; if it comes in different flavors, NTSC and/or Pal.  I ask that, because some people were selling them from the UK and Australia, on E-Bay and I was worried that the Pal ( If they exist ) Aminet CD's would be more trouble than they're worth.  As to weither or not Amiga's are worth getting, ANY self respecting Amigan would say YES to that question. I have 4, but have been so out of touch with them, ( I only recently just got them all ) that I ask a lot of seemingly simple and sometimes stupid questions about them; so please bear with me. Thanks all.

No disrespect intended - I didn't know you were already an Amiga user. Your question lead me to think you were asking whether Amigas are worth getting. We all know the answer to that  :-)

Just to reiterate what cgutjahr said, the Aminet CDs themselves will work just fine on a PAL or NTSC Amiga, but if any of the software on it is specifically written for one video standard or the other you may have a problem with that specific piece of software.

@MarkAshley

No problem dude, I have been out of the Amiga scene for quite awhile, since the 1st initial release of the, at the time, A4000, when I was stationed in England in the '90's.

@leirbag28

I tried to look up Aminet on the web, Google returned a bunch of "Official looking" Aminet sites. I've tried most of them and they seem legitimate; which is the Official one?  Also, does Amiga Forever support .lha files?

@anyone who knows the answer to this. . . .

Does the transfer of files from the Aminet CD's or website, allow you to play the games, utilities or any other file you download to your Amiga as if it were the original fully licensed product?  Thanks

The files for the site are .lha, is that something that has to been run on an actual Amiga computer, or does it go with some emulation software? Also, on the Aminet website, I've spent a decent amount of time downloading files, which is fine, but would love to know if there's a way to mass download. Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all,
   Here's a new question for this topic;

Which Aminet Set, 4-12 and Aminet Games, is most worth while getting? ( For games and Workbench utilities, graphics )

I've been reading the descriptions on Softhut's Site, but some are lacking anything at all, while others make it sound like they have everything from the previous set included in the current one viewed; i.e. - Set 7, has all of 6 plus 600 MB added. Thanks all.

Ed
