Actually, I bought a NOS A4000 a couple years ago and the battery was in pristine condition. I suspect if they've never been charged they won't leak. Similarly, I've got a brand new spare NiCd that's been sitting in a bag for absolute ages that also hasn't leaked.

actually discharged batteries often leak. i have had some nicads and nimh amiga replacement batts in the plastic storage from years ago that gained fuzz on them in the drawer. luckily i quit using them eons ago.

Its very hit and miss which ones will leak. i've gotten 15 year old amigas with perfect looking batteries, and one board the other day with a bad one.
brand of batteries also does not seem to matter.

You know a lot about amigas but I'm going to disagree with you on this one. I think that the batter must have been energized at some point for it to start to decompose and leak. So I think they will be fine and the battery will be pristine. Pretty amazing to find an NOS a3000.

I also have to disagree with all amigas still in use have had batt leakage. That is for sure incorrect. I have worked on and owned many amigas that their batteries were perfect even now. The problem is when they are stored and not used. it seems ones that get daily usage dont have the problem? (A lot of toasters I upgraded/repaired that were used in studios daily had no batt probs)

This is wrong. the worst thing to do to batteries weather lead acid or nicad or Nimh is to leave them dead flat. batteries do not like this.
there could be many reasons for why some leak some dont, including some had a good mfg process and quality control, some did not.
soldering process could of hurt some from the get go(too much heat).
storage and usage make a difference.
many variables here.
I've seen some good and some bad, but only a fool leaves a 15-20 year old battery on a board regardless of leaks or not. IT will leak eventually and why risk it.

I have had many boards where the battery looked good at first glance but acid had wicked its way down the legs into solder joints, just because you dont see green/white fuzz don't assume its not leaking.
