Sometimes using 80 pin drives without high byte terminated adapters can cause troubles.Since you have small partitions under 4gb i would think you could get away with a cheap adapter.
Is the drive terminated properly?
did u set the jumper "Active term enable nar mode)
seems u can jumper it for narrow mode with this(see your drive label)
bad cables have caused many a trouble,i would change it with a known good one just in case to see if it eliminated the troubles.
last resort,try one 2GB partition only.
