I am a big fan of the old Gold Box D&D games like Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades and Pools of Darkness

argh, I remember finishing the curse and secret with the same characters ... I realised that I should get a life when I was somewhere in the middle of pools of darkness. But hey, it was very a good chance to improve my English (maybe I need to play more ?) I still have my pools of darkness disks somewhere, and my last save was still working when I checked last year. I better move it to hd.

I would like to write a Gold Box style D&D game using the UFO game engine and game play.  Would that qualify as a RPG?

the UFO enemy unknown is definitely not a RPG, as someone stated before, but I think the combat engine in UFO can be adapted to a gold box style game, and it would qualify as a RPG (even games like diablo qualify as rpg these days). But practically it's nearly impossible, I'm not sure if microprose will be willing to give their sources to you (I'm not even sure if microprose still exists) and you would need to spend lots of time to make "gold box" era graphics for the engine (I mean like castles, forests, dragons, fireballs etc.). hmm, when I think about it, maybe it's possible if you have enough devotion. but still it would be very demanding project.
