@sim085

Yep, I got these errors when installing WB2.04. I've tried various maxtransfer settings.
I also changed the gvp rom to 4.13 ( instead of 4.5) and I tried another PSU.
To no avail.
Then I swapped the Sandisk Ultra II 2 GB for an old Toshiba 128 MB CF card.
It worked like a charm.
Like I said in the other thread, you might want to try the old 1 GB Sandisk CF cards.
I use the same CF adapter in my a4000 and a1200 with sandisk ultra II cards with no problems, so I think the GVP scsi controller has problems with the newer highspeed CF cards.
Eventually I swapped the Toshiba card for a Transcend 2 GB SSD, and that one also works like a charm.

In WinUAE it worked ok.
As soon as I connected it to the GVP hd8+ I got problems with the Utra II card.

So there is shit still to come ...

I managed to install Workbench 3.1 through WinUAE by changing the MaxTransfer value to 0x1fe00, while leaving the Mask value as it is.

However I still have to connect everything to the GVP hard drive.

... to be continued ...

Anyways, just out of curiosity; what is the Mask value? I can understand the MaxTransfer but not the Mask.

Yeah, I use 0x1FE00 too.
According to my manual, the MASK value should be 0xFFFFFFFE for the gvp hd8+ (so it can use every type of memory for DMA).

I hope you have more luck than me when you install the card in your gvp hd.

Thank you for that information :) By any chance, is it possible to change the MaxTransfer and Mask values after the drive is partitioned and Workbench installed?
 :)

Yes, you can change it after partitioning and installing WB.

Good luck.

One more thing Sim. When you install the card in your HD8+, test it with copying a disk to your CF card. For example your Workbench disk.
Like you said, the errors appear at random. So it's probably best to copy a large bunch of files to your CF card.
I changed my maxtransfer at least 20 times, and every time I copied my WB install disks I got (random) errors on the CF card.

When I change these values it does not allow me to "Save Changes to Drive" and when I enter again to change these two values I get the original 0xfffffe and 0xffffff again. I am afraid these are not being saved.

I have set the hardrive to allow both read/write operations.

When you change something in the maxtransfer and mask fields, you have to press ENTER for the changes to be accepted.

Something else,

At the moment when I connect the CF card to the GVP HD8+ I first get a black screen for a long time and then the insert disk screen. Could this be related with the SCSI_DEVICE_NAME or the MASK value of the partitions?

When you use HDtoolbox on your real amiga, the SCSI_DEVICE_NAME tooltype should be 'gvpscsi.device'.
Try to boot from your 3.1 install floppy, and start hdtoolbox (with the correct scsi_device_name).
Does it recognize the CF card then?

I formatted the CF card again and I plugged it in the GVP. I then Insert workbench install disk and change the SCSI_DEVICE_NAME to 'gvpscsi.device'.

However when I open HDToolBox I have all the buttons disabled again. I guess this means that the GVP is not recognising the CF card (or that there is anything connected to it).

Does the MASK value effect this? (However there is not way to change the MASK value of a formatted CF card if HDToolBox does not even want to see it connected right!?)

Doublecheck if you connected things the right way. Maybe you forgot to connect the powercables to your SCSI-IDE adapter (I know it's a long shot, but you never know).

Does your HD8+ have it's own PSU, or did you perform the PSU mod, so it is powered by the same PSU that powers the A500? If so, maybe the PSU of the A500 doesn't provide enough juice to power both the A500 and the GVP.

Everything should be connected right. The IDE -> CF adapter card has a right light turning on. This would not turn on unless properly connected with the SCSI -> IDE card.

No the GVP has its own power supply. When I try to autoboot I can see the GVP trying to access the drive without any luck.

I was wondering if maybe it is a Jumper setting on the SCSI -> IDE card.

Do you have a manual of the SCSI-IDE adapter?

If you have a spare IDE harddisk, you can try to connect it to the SCSI-IDE, and see if that works.

What CF-IDE and SCSI-IDE adapter are you using?
Do you have some links to the sites where you bought them?

Edit: Never mind. I found an old post of yours.

I have found a PDF with the jumper settings of your SCS-IDE.

You can find it here:

Sorry I did not send before ... we had power cut.

No problem.

Did you see my previous post with the jumper settings of  your SCSI-IDE?
Looks like you have to jumper switches 4-5-6 to OFF-ON-OFF

Hi again,

sorry for the delay but we had another power-cut here (just my luck). Anyways, I am at home now and I had a look at the card. I had another look at the manual but I still cannot understand it.

There are in all 22 pins labeled from 1 to 11. Now should I set the jumber as follows:

11__10__09__08__07__06__05__04__03__02__01 < --- (numbers)
-----------------------------------------------
0___0___0___0___0___1___0___1___0___0___0 <--- (pins)
0___0___0___0___0___1___0___1___0___0___0

Where in the above diagram two vertically aligned '1' represet a peace of plastic placed on the pins? or I understood everything baddly?

Well, it's a bit weird, because according to the manual there should be ten jumpers.
There probably is an extra jumper reserved for future use if needed.

What I would try is this:

11__10__09__08__07__06__05__04__03__02__01 < --- (numbers)
-----------------------------------------------
0___0___0___1___0___1___0___0___0___0___0 <--- (pins)
0___0___0___1___0___1___0___0___0___0___0

if that doesn't work i would try

11__10__09__08__07__06__05__04__03__02__01 < --- (numbers)
-----------------------------------------------
0___0___0___0___1___0___1___0___0___0___0 <--- (pins)
0___0___0___0___1___0___1___0___0___0___0

It's a bit difficult, because it looks like JP0 in the manual is not used, so I don't know if it's there or not.

According to the manual jp4-5-6 should be OFF-ON-OFF and JP7 should be ON (assuming that your CF-IDE is DMA capable).

There are nine pins (not 10 and neither 11, only 9). Since pin zero is never used I assume that I have pins from 1 to 9 (0 excluded).

You are correct.

I am becoming more familiar to what the manual is saying. What I can not understand is this. When you say "OFF" I understand 0, this means I do not have to connect any peace of plastic right? In that case wht is the difference between '0' and '-' in that manual?

If it says 0, you don't have to connect the piece of plastic (it's called a jumper).
There is '-' written in the manual when that jumper (or group of jumpers) is NOT being discussed. For example, the DMA setting is jumper 7, which is either 0 or 1 (OFF or ON). The rest of the jumpers has a '-'.

Quote from: sim085;511748
After a few jumper changes, I can confirm the following, if I for example put an incorrect jumper the light on the IDE -> CF card does not switch on, while it does switch on when I put the plastic (1) on pin 5 and 7. However still nothing comes up.

You should only have a jumper on 5 and 7.

Do you have the CF-IDE adapter jumpered as master?

Maybe you should test it with a harddisk to see if that works.
If it does, maybe the CF card is the culprit.

Quote from: sim085;511748
Additionally, If I connect a normal drive then can I let the jumper settings as they are, that is I set pin 5 and 7 on?

Yes you can leave it as it is.

Yes
What I am planning to di is connect the hard drive to SCSI -> IDE card, then load Workbench Install disk and change the SCSI_DEVICE_NAME to 'gvpscsi.device' and then turn on HDToolBox.

That should hypothetically work right?

Yes it should work.

Quote from: sim085;511757
I really hope so. I can not wait to get rid of it at this point!

You could try to remove jumper7. Maybe your CF-IDE doesn't support DMA.

If the CF-card is the problem, maybe you need the Sandisk utility to change the Card from removeable to fixed.
But first I suggest trying it with a harddisk.

If you really can't make the Ultra II work, I can sent you my Toshiba 128MB for the cost of shipping.
