Mac likes to put a .trashes file in every directory, though. :-/

FUD, aka: lies.

Mac OS X, not Mac (that's a computer) puts the .Trash folder/drawer/directory at the root of the each volume/partition/disk so your precious "undelete" will work, when you mistakenly delete a file that you shouldn't have.

What Mac OS X does put in every folder/drawer/directory is the file .DS_Store, which stores the state of the view used in Finder (view = icon mode, or list mode, or browser mode).

Indeed. Except AFAIK only Mac OS X exhibits this behaviour, therefore it doesn't apply to the platform.

Easy, Tiger.

So it's like a .info file, essentially.

:-) Tiger... hehehe. Good one! I was actually writing it in a very non-chalant way, but I do get ticked off with the exhibited misinformation about Mac OS in general.

As for the 'like .info', it's not so. Because the .info contains file metadata. The .DS_Store (which like the .Trash is safe to delete any time you want, as long as you realize what you're deleting), basically saves or contains the settings for the views. For example, if I select icon view (so that I see the thumbnails of a directory), and then enlarge those icons to 128x128 pixels, that setting will take effect every time you open said folder, as long as .DS_Store exists in there. If you delete it, then the default Finder setting takes effect, which is icon view but I think closer to 48x48 pixels for each icon.

PS. Sorry for high-jacking what seems a completed thread, but ignorance is not bliss, it's mental poverty, and facts are facts, and knowledge is information and information is mental power.

...which is clearly not enough:

Facts

EDIT:
And a helpful tip for disabling .DS_Store files on network stores:

I would be surprised as well, but you know now... as the seller was obviously a pirate (since he's including 3 DVDs of games), and Amiga buyers are ethical people, they just refused to buy it!

OK, in all truth the fine print says what happened: "The seller ended this listing early because the item is no longer available for sale. This item or one like it has been relisted." Which probably means the seller and buyer agreed on a Buy It Now and finished off the deal nice and quick.

And now the thread is back on topic, all with factual info, and no FUD, yay! Let's go get some 2xCF adapters now!

EDIT:
And to add something pertinent and useful, check the DMA compliance of your CF card:

And in case you're considering CF vs SCSI, this is another good discussion:
