A3000 + green screen. If you have an A3000 share some info
« on: April 17, 2006, 12:58:51 PM »
Hey guys,

my A3000 stopped working one day. Now, the reason probably is battery leaking. Funny thing is that I removed the battery a long time ago, and I'm sure I cleaned the spill. I guess in the end if wasn't sufficient, because I found corrosion damage that was more extensive when I opened it up afterwards.

Anyhow, so now it turns on and I get a green screen and after a few seconds it seems to "rebooot" and the same thing repeats. The custom chips that I could plug into an A500 seem to be ok (this includes Paula, Denise and Mrs. Agnus). I also tried piggy-backing good DRAM over the low 1MB of CHIP RAM, and no changes :(

Now what seemed interesting as I was mearusing voltages and checking out the motherboard is that the following chips get quite warm, tending towards hot (within 1-3minutes). I can still touch'em without pain or scorching my fingers, but they feel hotter than normal:

U252, U202 (what are they? PALs?)
U714, U701 (what are they? PALs?)
U253, U255, U257 and the ones parallel to these (what are they?)

The whole other side of the motherboard (where the CPU, kickstars etc are located) seem much cooler.

Can anyone with an A3000 verify how the chips should behave?
Much appreciated, as I don't have another A3000 and I don't know where else to start...

PS. Keyboard is completely dead. Ctrl-Amiga-Amiga does nothing, and the LED on the CapsLock doesn't light at all when pressed.

Flashlab:

But the CPU should still be functional, which it's not (the keyboard is dead), as far as I know. It _shouldn't_ be a CHIP RAM problem, as the computer was not in use since the battery was removed. DRAM chips are extremely unlikely to self-destruct. Something got corroded and is causing this problem, I just can't figure out where/what.

Flashlab: duh.. that's what I've been saying man.

Oliver: no, I cannot see any "broken" traces, else I would have fixed them up. There's a big crater on the negative battery terminals. There was acid/discoloration/crusting of the green stuff on various traces, but after I cleaned it out, the copper is still there and not broken up. The reason I'm asking questions about the heat of the chips is to try to narrow down which areas might be affected and then look for the traces leading to those areas. Am I making any sense?

hey man, thanks for trying to help, really. I didn't mean to offend you. But please try to read what the poster says (I gave a lot of detail and specific questions), that way you won't waste your time or make things more confusing than they already are. Danke :)

Hey Zipper,

I tested some of it, but found nothing. I'll go over it again, but I'm afraid that there might be some problems in the inbetween layers :(
