GVP '030/ram/scsi accelerator problem?
« on: February 08, 2008, 05:12:13 PM »
I'm uncertain how much of a problem I have but...

I have a GVP '030/ram/scsi card I got with some other items.  It was not installed and wasn't claimed to be working so I have no idea of its state.

At the moment it fails to function in a 2000 with the machine failing to boot with it in.  It doesn't cycle and keep trying to reboot, it just won't do anything.  On removal the 2000 boots fine.

I've looked at the jumpers per configs I've found, I've tried the board with and without a scsi drive attached.

Any ideas on troubleshooting this?

It may have a fault and require someone with more training to diagnose and fix if possible.  is there anyone around who looks at GVP stuff in the U.S. any more?

thanks.
Sincerely,

-- Sprocket...

maybe it's as simple as bad ram?

I think I'll try removing the sole simm installed and checking the jumpers again and see if it will work....

otherwise, I'm thinking scsi might be misconfiged somehow...or if there's some autoboot thing.

do you have another scsi+ram addon on that A2000 ?

nothing in the machine other then the GVP board.  I've tried it with the scsi connected and disconneted.  only extra ram is on the GVP.

A black screen means a cpu problem; so it's entirely possible you're suffering from the dreaded cold solder problem. It could be just about anywhere; but a quick examination of the cpu socket and crystal oscillator may help. It could also be one of the ttl chips or a pal somewhere on the board.

entirely possible.

I'll keep playing with it.  reseating was on my list.  no cracks or anything broken that I can see.

there is a dark area on the metal plate behind the card.  My assumption was that normal component heat had done it but it may have been something worse.

the dark area was on the plate the hard drive was mounted to...likely from the drive.

nothing else 'looks' bad.

What Rev A2000 do you have? Some required that you pull the 68000 from the socket before installing any accelerators.

nope..this is a revision 6.x motherboard...and does work with another GVP accelerator I have.

this is a 50 Mhz '030.

thanks.
