Purple - Not an "official" color, but may be caused by bad ROMs.
I'd recommend pushing down on the ROM chips to make sure they are securely in, and checking all other connections.
Usual method - detach everything and test, and build your way up testing one expansion at a time.
PS this is for the
A4000, , but I assume the A1200 has identical fault indicating colour screens at startup.
